Labidochromis sp."nkhali"

Labidochromis sp."nkhali" is found near Luhuchi Rocks (sometimes this reef is also referred to as Sambia Reef), in front of the coast at Mbamba Bay. It`s a very territorial species which defends it`s cave fiercely.

In the lake the males of these species can grow to 9 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 12 cm, females grow to about 9 cm.

Labidochromis sp."nkhali" can behave intolerant against equal male species. Against other inhabitants they are in general tolerant. You can best keep this small species with multiple females and other small staying mbuna and also a lot of hiding places in the aquarium.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with little insects but also looking for food on rocks covered with algae. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
